The MRI Reward Study
The MRI Autism Reward Study is a brain
imaging project that is being carried out
by researchers from Trinity College Dublin
in the new Centre for Advanced Medical
Imaging (CAMI) at St. James’s
Hospital. The purpose of this study is to
improve understanding of brain systems that
are important for processing different
types of rewards. We are looking for right
handed males, aged between 12 and 25, who
have a diagnosis of Autism or Asperger
Syndrome, to take part in this study.
Participation involved two testing
sessions. The first session takes place at
Trinity College Dublin, and involves doing
some pen and paper tests, as well as some
computer based tasks. The second testing
session involves doing computer based tasks
while lying in the MRI scanner at CAMI, in
St. James’s Hospital. If you are
interested in taking part, please read the
information sheets provided. There are
separate versions for participants who are
over 18 and those who are under 18. Please
feel free to contact us if you have any
further questions, or if you would like to

New Support Website
Stephanie Fitzgerald (Educational Psychologist), has crea ted a new website called www.destine.ie . It is a for parents, teachers, voluntary organisations, support groups and professionals to meet, offer tips, ask questions and share their experiences of working or dealing with the education system. If you are on Facebook you can become a fan of the site through by clicking on www.facebook.com/destinesupport
If you would like to contribute to the network just click on Sharing Experiences and write 5-6 lines about something you did that worked well or information or tips that you think someone else might benefit from. Below is an example of an experience someone from the community shared (although your input does not have to be so long – whatever suits!) -
Hi all, we had our little fella diagnosed in august at the age of four and a half after he had a grommets op. it was obvious at this point that he had major sensory issues. Before that i put all his behaviours down to his lack of speech but that has improved dramatically and so has his speech. His language is still poor but improving all the time. Our boy also started school in an autism unit and i feel blessed that he got a place because his interaction with others has come on in leaps and bounds his ability to play with toys and his aversion to noise is not so bad now. he is only there since November. We also have issues with the bath and that is mainly in the last year or so, he can go weeks with a lick and a promise as me mam would have said but we are working on it. The one problem I really need help with is the teeth. I cannot get near him with a tooth brush and i just don’t know what to do we tried everything we can think of also his food tastes are becoming narrower, maybe Vince you could advise me on this. On the positive side of things I was delighted this weekend when I saw him take out crayons and a colouring book without being told to or anyone suggesting it to him. He said I do my work now well i felt he had won the presidential election, I was so proud!!! Best wishes, Poppy
